Ghana’s Black Stars beat their arch-rivals The Super Eagles of Nigeria 4-1 in the final of the WAFU Cup of Nations to emerge as champions.
Nigeria, headed into the final on a high after their group game win against Ghana earlier in the tournament, and haven not conceded a goal in five outings leading up to the title decider. But the gallant tournament hosts had other ideas.
Spurred on by their vociferous fans camped inside the impressive Cape Coast Stadium, goal king Stephen Sarfo scored twice in a match watched by Confederation of African Football president Ahmad Ahmad and Ghana’s vice president, Dr. Bawumia.
Further strikes from Hearts of Oak duo Vincent Atingah and Winful Cobbinah took the goal tally to four and put the outcome of the final beyond any doubt.
Nigeria hit a consolation goal through Rabiu Ali later in additional time.
The victory served as a befitting conclusion to a very well organized and exciting tournament.
Earlier in the day, Niger came third by defeating Benin 2-1 in a curtain-raiser to the final.
The PFAG congratulates the Black Stars, all participating countries, organizers and fans on a massively successful WAFU Cup of Nations, Ghana 2017.
