In our country, people are hoping that Andre Ayew or Christian Atsu will make the World XI,” said Baffoe. That seems to be a bit optimistic for this year’s team. Ayew is slowly but steadily building his reputation at Swansea City, while Atsu must first try to become a regular in Bournemouth’s first team.

Maybe in the future both strikers can follow in the footsteps of Samuel Eto’o or Didier Drogba, the only African players who until now have been picked in the World XI. For now they must focus on equaling Michael Essien’s achievement, as he is the only Ghanaian player who ever made the list of 55.

This Tuesday in the Ghanaian city of Kumasi, Ayew, Atsu and their fellow Black Stars will take on Comoros in their return leg of the second qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup.
